Company Sangsangin Ship Machinery used 318 axle lines of Cometto SPMT EVO2 for this challenge. It’s the world’s largest project ever done on self-propelled modular trailers SPMT by Cometto!
A huge structure of orange painted steel stood out of the port area in TongYeong, South Korea. A really unusual and stunning sight, even for a highly experienced operations team. The crane manufacturer Sangsangin Ship Machinery in South Korea built this spectacular structure for Sembcorp Marine Singapore.
They manufacture drill ships for one of the largest oil companies at Jurong Shipyard.
A giant turned by 90 degrees on the barge
A gigantic move was part of the transport process. Gianpiero Alleteo, sales manager at Cometto, explains: “The crane girders were loaded on a barge by Cometto MSPE EVO2 modular transporters with a payload capacity of 60t per axle line.”
When the two crane girders came alongside the jetty, they had to be turned by 90 degrees on the barge to facilitate the installation at the shipyard. The structure had the impressive length of 182 m, a width of 21 m, a height of 30 m and a total weight of 15,000 tons.
“It was a very demanding job that required precise engineering and thorough preparation. 53 units of 6-axle SPMT EVO2 formed a total of 318 axle lines. They were propelled by 13 Power Pack units allowing the ginormous crane girders to turn and carry out this amazing job successfully”, details Gianpiero Alleteo.
Self-propelled power by Cometto
According to Sangsangin Ship Machinery, the goliath crane was set up in December 2019, where the Cometto SPMT EVO2 modular transporters played a vital role.
The goliath crane is the largest crane in the world. Sangsangin Ship Machinery has emerged as a leading business in the global goliath crane market. “We plan to target the global shipbuilding market through continuous investments in our facilities. We have signed contracts with Russian and Indian shipyards this year”, explained a representative from Sangsangin Ship Machinery.
Thanks to the project’s success, the two parties are currently discussing Sembcorp Marine’s new plan to build the LNG bunkering barge.
Up to 70t payload per axle line
On a global scale, heavy industries including shipyards are building more and more big and specialized cargoes and vessels. Cometto put a great effort into the development of the MSPE EVO series to meet this specific market demand. During the last years, Cometto has supplied a large number of self-propelled trailers to the Korean market.
The EVO3 series by Cometto offers the most powerful concept in the market with a payload of up to 70t per axle line!
Cometto provides its worldwide customers with highly efficient transport solutions and will continue its growth strategy in this segment.
