So that everything goes smoothly, Schultze Steel Service uses a fleet of straddle carriers, to which two new Cometto MTH45 transport vehicles have now been added.
"We have been working together on this challenging project since 2019 and were ultimately able to win the contract in the hard elimination process", says Joachim Kolb, Sales Manager at Cometto, about the preparatory phase. "Our Design office showed what it is made of here. We started with virtually a blank piece of paper and came up with a high-tech straddle carrier."
Filtering out travel vibrations
This is the Ferrari among straddle carriers. Not only because it is red and comes from Italy, but also because the vehicle reaches a top speed of 25 kilometres per hour with a tare weight of 43 tonnes. Even with a payload of 45 tonnes and a total weight of 88 tonnes, it still achieves an impressive 10 kilometres per hour, propelled by a 500 HP diesel engine.
Maximum comfort is ensured by a pneumatic seat in the driver's cab, which is glazed all-round. "Since the vehicles are used in 3-shift operation and there are challenging surface conditions along the transport routes, we use our patented Cometto air suspension", says Cometto's Technical Director Fabrizio Lippi, describing the know-how employed for greater comfort. "As a result, we filter out around 80 percent of the most extreme vibrations when driving over uneven surfaces. That protects the equipment and – what's much more important – the driver's back."
Exclusive T-shirt to say thank you
Frank-Peter Haase, works manager at Schultze Steel Service, and several employees visited the Cometto factory for the acceptance of the second MTH45. "We surprised the Cometto team", he smiles and explains: "After putting the first machine into operation in Bremen, we were absolutely delighted. That's why we had exclusive T-shirts produced, which each Cometto employee involved received as a souvenir of this project. The delight was palpable on both sides."
Joachim Kolb is entirely satisfied with the result achieved: "The general rule at Cometto is 'We say what we do and we do what we say.' And that's precisely what we put 100 percent into practice once again in this project." There is a further positive side-effect of the new acquisition: following a short start-up period, the owner discovered that fuel consumption has been reduced by 30 percent in comparison with the old equipment.
"And due to further savings on the maintenance side it may be assumed that we will continue to drive Schultze Steel Service in future … propelled to the MAX. Our cordial thanks go to Stefan Schultze and Frank-Peter Haase as well as their entire team for choosing Cometto as their partner and putting their trust in us. Have a safe journey."
